USB4 active optical cables carry 40Gbps and 240W up to ~50m without loss — here's when they beat copper.
USB4 moves data at 40Gbps and can deliver up to 240W of power over a single cable. Passive copper USB4 cables are cheap and perfect for the desk — but like HDMI, they lose signal quickly. Past roughly 2–3m for full 40Gbps, copper needs active boosters or thick, expensive constructions, and 240W PD draws need heavy-gauge wire that gets unwieldy fast.
A USB4 Active Optical Cable (AOC) converts the electrical signal to light at the source connector and back to electrical at the device. Light doesn't degrade over distance the way electricity does, so you keep full 40Gbps and clean data delivery to about 50m — through walls, across rooms, or between racks — with a cable that stays thin and flexible.
| Factor | USB4 AOC | Copper |
|---|---|---|
| Max length at 40Gbps | Up to ~50m | ~2–3m |
| Cable thickness | Very thin & light | Thick, heavy at high power |
| EMI immunity | Immune | Susceptible |
| Best for | Long runs, AV, signage, racks | Desk, short device links |
USB4 AOC is directional: each end is labeled (host / device). Install it the right way round and it just works. For short desk links, plain copper remains the economical choice.
